An oral hygienist is an expert who treats patients with periodontal disease under the supervision of a dentist. His/her areas of work include collecting data for assessing the progression of periodontal disease, performing initial stages of periodontal treatment, and advising on appropriate and effective oral hygiene.
The oral hygienist and the dentist thoroughly discuss each patient and together they create a plan and follow the patient's response to the treatment. In cases of complex and advanced periodontal diseases, the surgical treatment phase is performed by the dentist.
During regular check-ups, the oral hygienist monitors the state of the periodontal tissues, advises the patient on how to perform oral hygiene at home in the easiest and most efficient way and, in the case of the reactivation of the disease, takes appropriate action in cooperation with the dentist.
